Proof that the Mayans are Right? AAdvantage Bag Tags to be Discontinued 12/20!
I’ll have the results of yesterday’s reader giveaway at the end of this post, but first this shocking bit of news that might just confirm that the Mayans were right and the world will end on December 21, 2012:
American has either sold or given away personalized AAdvantage luggage tags for years, and on almost any AA flight they’re a pretty common sight, especially up in the first class cabin.
No explanation why they’re being discontinued. But the timing seems a little suspicious, and in the absence of facts the only logical explanation for a change this big is that the Mayans were right about the world ending on 12/21/2012.
Anyway, if you’re making plans to survive in a post-apocalyptic world and want to stock up on personalized AAdvantage luggage tags you need to order them by December 20, 2012. They come in a set of 2 for $20, plus taxes and shipping, and take 4 to 6 weeks for delivery.
Tip of the hat to a reader for noticing the change on the website: thanks David F.!!
Reader Giveaway

Congratulations CL!! (I’ll send you a email later today to get your details. )
Thanks again to everyone that participated!
Are they actually cutting elite tags? I thought they were just eliminating the ones for sale.
Guess this means the world is ending…or American Airlines and US Airways are merging 🙂
I think they are redesigning the tag in preparation for the merge!
This is interesting. Could they have been losing money selling them?
I wonder if this means no EXP tags, too. I’m finally getting up there this month.
Maybe it’s just a temporary halt in production while the new livery is being rolled out?
@ Christ @ John777 – They are still sending out luggage tags with Executive Platinum membership kits, I’d be surprised if that changed. It looks like they’re just not going to sell them anymore. (Congratulations John777!!)
@ The Weekly Flyer @ Jerry – That’s my fallback explanation for everything else. Buttonhole in the napkin gone? Merger. Smaller snacks? Merger. 😉
@ g-flyer – That’s could be it, I wouldn’t be surprised.
Wooo wait for the USA Airlines Tag 🙂
Seems dumb to cancel this. Surely the advertising, loyalty and the fee pays for the trouble.
“That’s my fallback explanation…” Good one, easy enough. I’m just trying to find out a way when I can give away two brand new legacy AA napkins with holes in them. Before or after the merger?
My reading of the notice suggests this is just for the non-elite generic style of tag and that the elite ones will continue to be available, as are the Admiral Club ones (at the clubs).
maybe with the introduction of the new 787 livery they are introducing a new American Airline logo … luggage tags would have the new logo.
Admirals Club logo is 5 stars, so no need to discontinue the luggage tag.
