Last year I was waiting on a flight at DFW’s terminal D: it’s the two-tiered international terminal, with departing passengers boarding at the lower level and arriving passengers exiting flights and clearing immigration on the top level.
I had stepped into the restroom and as I was washing my hands, I heard a loud noise outside the bathroom. At first, I thought it sounded like hail hitting building, which didn’t make any sense because the weather was beautiful that morning.
As I stepped out of the bathroom and went back into open center terminal space, I noticed that everyone in the immediate area was looking up while standing and clapping. It took me a second to process, but then I saw a long line of soldiers walking off a plane and heading toward customs. As they wound around the top level, everyone on the lower level stood and clapped: a wave of people rising as the soldiers moved by overhead. It was an amazing thing to see.
