Open an account with BankDirect and earn up to 21,000 AAdvantage Miles

I’ve mentioned this before, but I don’t normally write about banking and credit cards offers for two reasons:

1. With all the limited time offers, targeted offers, and various cards available, they’re too hard to for me to track.

2. I’ve been earning AAdvantage Miles as a Citibank and Citicard customer for a long time, but other than that and the fact that I am a happy customer, I’m not really qualified to make any kind of meaningful analysis or evaluate the value of of any particular credit card or banking offer. For that kind of info, there are much better resources like Rick Ingersoll at Frugal Travel Guy and Daraius Dubash over at Million Mile Secrets (to name just a few).

But, once in a while a banking account or credit card offer comes along that’s straight forward enough that even I can write about it. Like this one:

All you have to do to earn AAdvantage miles at BankDirect is open one of our Mileage products — Mileage Checking Accounts, Mileage MMAs and Mileage CDs. And you can earn even more AAdvantage miles by using other BankDirect services related to your Mileage account – like payroll direct deposit and bill pay. An AAdvantage member who banks with BankDirect could easily earn 10,000 AAdvantage miles a year with a Mileage Checking Account and could even earn 50,000 miles with the purchase of a single Mileage CD.

New Account Offer:

Earn 1,000 miles for each new Mileage Checking Account or Mileage Money Market Account opened. Additionally, earn 1,000 miles for every $100,000 in initial deposit, up to $500,000, per household.
Earn 10,000 miles for establishing full payroll direct deposit from your employer into a Mileage Checking Account.
Earn 5,000 miles for using BankDirect’s bill pay service.
Earn 5,000 miles for using your BankDirect Visa CheckCard.
Earn 1,000 miles for referring a friend when they open a Mileage Checking account.

I’m not a customer but I’m seriously considering opening an account, if you’re a BankDirect customer, or have an opinion about this offer, please share it with a comment.

  1. I have an account and think it’s a great bank! If you have someone refer you, both people get 1,000 miles too.

  2. How to earn Bill Pay miles?

In order to receive the one-time 5,000 mileage credit for bill pay, you must pay at least 3 different merchants each month for 12 consecutive months from a BankDirect Mileage Checking Account through our online bill payment system. The one-time 5,000 mileage credit is paid out after you have reached the minimum 12 consecutive month requirement to 3 different merchants each of those 12 months. To receive mileage credit, contact BankDirect Client Support to notify us that you have met the minimum qualifications. Please allow 6 to 8 weeks for the miles to post to your AAdvantage® account.

  3. Since I reached the maximum balance on my rewards checking account a long time ago, this is a no-brainer to store additional cash.

With interest rates around 1.0% on even the best savings/money market accounts, I’d much rather earn AA miles at an equivalent rate of about 3.6% per year (valuing the miles at a conservative $0.03/each). So with the 20,000+ bonus sign-ups, it’s really a nice deal.

My only advice is that BankDirect is very much a “spirit of the promotion” type of bank. In other words, don’t try to make 12 $1 Amazon gift card purchases per month to qualify for the 5,000 Visa CheckCard bonus miles. They will likely deny the bonus and may flag your account.

  4. Thanks for the shout out!

I’ve been a customer for a long time, and it is a great place to park money in a low interest environment and get AA miles.

They allow 4 free uses of any ATM around the country and I can mail checks (when I do get them) free of charge.

As Jimmy pointed out, there is a fee for a balance below $2,500, but I use BankDirect as my primary bank.
