If you’re tired of the cold weather and thinking about a cruise to warmer climes, American Airlines Cruises is offering up to 25,000 bonus AAdvantage Miles as a further temptation.  This is how they’re describing their offer:

For a limited time, when you book a cruise on AA.com you’ll earn up to 25,000 AAdvantage bonus miles! Plus, when you book right now during our Cruise Getaway Sale, you’ll find deals from $169, free onboard spending credit, and balcony upgrades.

So, book your relaxing cruise vacation today and start planning how to spend 25,000 AAdvantage bonus miles on a second vacation! Here are a few ideas (each 25,000 miles or less):

Round–trip flight award within the Continental U.S.(excluding Hawaii)
American Airlines Vacations Package: 4–star hotel + rental car weekend getaway
Road Trip Adventure: Weekly car rental and two 1–night hotel stays along the way

The total number of miles you earn is based on the cabin you book and the lenght of your trip. Here’s the breakdown of the bonus levels:

Up to 25,000 Bonus Miles: Miles awards are per stateroom and are awarded to only one passenger per cruise booking.

To qualify for the bonus mileage award you must book a balcony or suite stateroom between Jan 6 2011 and Feb 11, 2011 aboard any 3 night or greater sailing departing before Dec 31, 2011.

3-5 night balcony sailings receive 1,750 bonus miles.

3-5 night suite sailings receive 2,500 bonus miles.

6-12 night balcony sailings receive 7,000 bonus miles.

6-12 night suite sailings receive 10,000 bonus miles.

13 night or longer balcony sailings receive 17,500 bonus miles.

13 night or longer suite sailings receive 25,000 bonus miles.

I can’t imagine being on a boat for 13 or more nights, let alone having the time to do it, but I was surprised by how affordable it would be. I assumed that a 13 night cruise in one of the premium cabins would be $10,000, but found packages starting for as little as $1,600 for a balcony stateroom. Anyway, if you’re already thinking about a cruise, then this offer might be all you need to make the decision.

After the snow, cold and ice in Dallas this week…..go here to book a cruise or find out more about the offer.

Both AAdvantage Geek’s world headquarters and American Airlines’ world headquarters are located in Dallas, which got hit with snow and ice yesterday, so it was a slow news day for both of us.  If you’ve ever watched some four or five year old kids play T-Ball, then you have an idea what it’s like when Dallas drivers hit the road during snow or ice.  It was a good day to just stay home.  Anyway…

NYC & Company, New York City’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organization, and American Airlines have teamed up to offer the “Win Big This Winter” sweepstakes which includes a pair of first class tickets to New York City, hotel accommodations, theatre tickets and dinner:

“Enter for a chance to win first-class round-trip tickets on American Airlines, complete with day passes to the American Airlines Admirals Club Lounge. Plus, enjoy an exclusive NYC weekend for two: stay in the City for three nights at the Hilton New York, have dinner at the celebrated db Bistro Moderne and see a show.”

The deadline to enter  is 11:59 p.m. EST on February 28, 2011.   Go here to read the terms and conditions and go here to enter the sweepstakes.

A Useful Tool to Help You Calculate Cost per AAdvantage Mile

Here’s a really cool Google Chrome extension that helps you maximize the number of AAdvantage Miles you earn for your dollar when you’re making your travel plans on AA.com.

Here’s the information from the Google Chrome Extension Gallery:

Cents per mile (CPM) is a common indicator of good value for the frequent flier community when purchasing airline tickets. This extension will compute the CPM for the cheapest economy fares listed on American Airlines’ Price & Schedule matrix at aa.com.

It’s not from American Airlines. It was developed by travel enthusiast Kyle Duarte and more information is available on his Flyer Tool site, where you’ll also find his oneworld Lounge Access Wizard, a great online tool to help you determine if you qualify for access to the Admirals Club or a oneworld partner lounge when traveling on American or one of the other oneworld carriers.

About to Lose Your AAdvantage Elite Status? American Airlines is Offering a Chance for You to Save the Perks To Which You’ve Become Accustomed

Posted on: January 5th, 2011 by: aadvantagegeek

As in previous years, American is offering AAdvantage Elite members that have failed to re-qualify for status  a chance to preserve their AAdvantage level and the benefits that go along with that status:  upgrades to first class, Priority AAcces, a free checked luggage allowance,  access to oneworld partner lounges when traveling internationally, better seating, and bonus AAdvantage miles for travel.  This is from the page on the American website:

Enjoy another full year of elite status by renewing your AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold membership for a one-time charge, extending your status through February 29, 2012.

Two-Tiered Pricing?
Members who have made more progress toward elite status requalification during 2010 will benefit from lower prices to extend their status. AAdvantage Platinum members who earn at least 40,000 elite qualifying miles or points (or 48 qualifying segments), and AAdvantage Gold members who earn at least 20,000 elite qualifying miles or points (or 24 qualifying segments) during 2010 qualify for lower prices.

AAdvantage Platinum
40,000 Miles or Points or 48 Segments Less than 40,000 Miles and Points and less than 48 Segments
$619 $769
AAdvantage Gold
20,000 Miles or Points or 24 Segments Less than 20,000 Miles and Points and less than 24 Segments
$409 $559

Who’s Eligible?
All current AAdvantage Platinum and AAdvantage Gold members who earned their 2010 elite status are eligible to participate in this offer provided they have flown at least one elite qualifying segment during 2010. Members may only pay to renew their 2011 status at the same elite level they earned for the 2010 membership year. Members who participated in the 2010 renewal offer are not eligible to extend their status for the 2011 membership year.

Why Renew?
By renewing your AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold membership, you’ll continue to receive the many benefits you’ve come to enjoy as an American Airlines AAdvantage elite status frequent traveler.
Flight bonuses, a 500-minimum mileage guarantee on most flights, and Priority AAccess privileges at check-in counters, security screening areas and boarding gates will enhance your travel experience. Upgrade privileges, earned upgrades and complimentary upgrades** help make your travel more comfortable and enjoyable. And waived checked baggage charges^ and waived AAdvantage Award processing charges make your benefits even more valuable.

Through this offer, eligible members can ensure their elite status remains valid through February 29, 2012.

How to Accept the Offer?
The opportunity to renew AAdvantage Platinum and AAdvantage Gold membership will be available from January 26, 2011, through April 30, 2011. Effective January 26, 2011, eligible AAdvantage members will have access to a dedicated website that will provide detailed instructions on how to renew their AAdvantage elite status. During the entire timeframe that membership renewal is ongoing, eligible members will be able to select a “Renew Now” button to go directly to the site and complete their renewal transaction.

If you’re an AAdvantage Executive Platinum member you’re out of luck. There’s only one way to maintain such exalted status, and that’s to earn it the hard way. In the past American has quietly offered Executive Platinum members that failed to re-qualify for status a “soft landing” as a courtesy and given them Platinum status. No word as to whether or not that will continue. I can only imagine the shock to the system that someone who has enjoy Executive Platinum status might endure if they were immediately return to a non-status level: $6 dollar beer, $7 Pringles, and $30 checked baggage fees.  Some might even be surprised to learn that an airplane has more than eight rows of seats.

I didn’t make it to Platinum in 2010: I fell about 17,000 miles short of re-qualifying. Fortunately, I’ll at least be a lowly AAdvantage Gold member will still be able to enjoy upgrades (though they’ll be a little harder to get now that I’m lower in the upgrade list), free checked luggage, and bonus miles (though I’m REALLY going to miss the 100% Bonus AAdvantage Miles and will have to live with the 50% bonus instead).

I’d definitely participate in the Buy-Back offer if I had failed to qualify for at least AAdvantage Gold. The checked baggage allowance alone would make it worthwhile to spend the money. Rather than buy back my Platinum status, I think I’ll spend the money on a trip to Seoul, Delhi, or Honk Kong and try to re-qualify for Platinum later this year and for 2012.

Hopefully I’ll be still be able to score the occasional upgrade, I’d really hate to give up the warm nuts and the chocolate chip cookie.

AAdvantage celebrates 30 years in 2011

This year is going to be a big year for the American Airlines AAdvantage program and so we can expect some exciting promotions and opportunities to earn even more miles.  This is from the press release that American issued today:

The American Airlines AAdvantage® program, the world’s first frequent flyer program, turns 30 years old this year and customers can expect to see several special activities to celebrate the occasion.

My big hope for 2011 is that we’ll see the return of a system wide Elite Qualifying Miles promotion (I’m determined to make Executive Platinum at least once), or maybe more triple milage offers from American’s cornerstone hubs to popular destinations (DFW to LGA, or DFW to ORD), and hopefully at least one 1 Million AAdvantage Miles contest.

In my opinion the strength of the AAdvantage program is, and always has been, the ability to actually use your miles. And through the years we’ve seen even more opportunities to use miles, and not just on American Airlines flights but with oneworld partner airlines, and now they can even be used to for car rentals and hotel stays. I’m a member of a couple of other frequent flyer programs, and AAdvantage is easily the best of them.

I’m hoping that in 2011 American continues to improve an already great program. What do you hope to see in the way of improvements or promotions?
