Boston to Paris Earns Double AAdvantage Miles

I was a kid back in the 1970s, and one of the events of the decade that I remember most vividly was the race between the Concord and a Boeing 747.

June 17, 1974 the Concord left Boston and headed to Paris. At the same time in Paris, a 747 departed Paris Orly airport bound for Boston’s Logan airport. The distance between the two cities was 3,448 miles.  In the time that it took the 747 to travel 620 miles, the Concord had already covered more than 2,800 miles.  

The Concord landed in Paris, spent about an hour on the ground, the departed Orly and returned back to Boston. It arrived at Logan 11 minutes before the 747. The whole journey took a little over 8 hours.

I was so completely fascinated by race that I decided that rather than devoting my life to finding dinosaur fossils, I would grow up to pilot the Concord.

Well, that plan didn’t work out and neither did the dream of scheduled four hour flights between the two cities, but at least it’s possible to earn Double AAdvantage Miles.
