For Memorial Day: A Soldier, a Father, a Song (also a Bonus AAdvantage Miles Offer)

I hope you’re having a good Memorial Day. If you’re like me, you’re weekend revolves around family, food, and fun.

A few days ago I heard a very moving story on the radio, and it’s reminded me that this day should also be a time to pause and reflect, and to remember the men and women who have died while serving in the military.

It also seems appropriate to try to pay tribute to them for their sacrifice, and I thought I might (in some very small way) be able to do so by sharing the story with you.

NPR reporter Melissa Block tells the story of an Army dad whose “words of loss, grief and remembrance heard on the radio turned into a number one country song.”

Giving and Winning

Frugal Travel Guy Rick has announced a new non-profit foundation he set up that’s dedicated to helping veterans, their families, and to fighting hunger:

Many of you know of my soft spot for the men and women of our country that have given so much of themselves in the military, sometimes with horrific life consequences. Wounded Warriors Project, the Fisher Houses and other Veterans programs will now benefit more from my day to day spend.

And the shocking news that over 14 million kids under the age of 18 in our country are not sure day to day if they will get a dinner time meal is just too hard for me to imagine. These are American problems that will take American solutions and I’m dedicating myself to giving the cashback I can earn on my daily spend to hungry kids and our Veterans.
