It’s not often that you can save money at the Apple Store, so I was a little surprised when I came across this offer:

Shop the Apple Store for the iPad, iPhone, MacBook Family, iMac, iPod and Apple TV, plus the latest curated accessories for your favorite Apple device. Enjoy free shipping on every order over $50 and earn miles.

Buy a Mac for university between June 11 and September 21 and receive a $100 Back to School Card to use on apps, books, music, and movies. Or buy the new iPad and get a $50 Back to School Card. And if you choose a Mac, save even more with Apple Education Pricing.

Who qualifies:

To qualify for the Back to School Card offer and to get special pricing on a Mac at the Apple Online Store for Education, you must be a university student, a student accepted to a university, a parent buying for a university student, or a faculty or staff member from any grade level.

The discounts are in the $100 to $200 range and purchases earn 1 AAdvantage mile per dollar.

A 13-inch: 2.9 GHz MacBook Pro retails for $1,499. With this offer you’ll get it for $1,399 plus free shipping. So you save $100, get a $100 App Store gift card, earn 1,399 AAdvantage Miles (or 2,798 miles if you use your Citi AAdvantage card).

Go here for complete details and don’t forget that each purchase from the AAdvantage eShopping Mall earns you another chance to win 100,000 AAdvantage Miles.

  1. Actually, Apple has deals on buying Macs for school every summer. And this is one of the lousier offers. In the past, they’ve offered things like an iPod Touch if you bought a Mac.

  2. @ Tim A – You’re right, they had a better deal last year: free iPod touch with a back to school purchase.

They just refreshed their portable offerings, and introduced the new MacBook Pro with Retina display, so I suspect they feel that this summer they won’t have to do much to to entice buyers. And they’re not even offering discounts on the new iPad.

A couple of years ago my Apple rep was offering a 1.7% discount on a $180K order. He said that he could go as high as 3% on a 500K deal. Let’s just say that I was underwhelmed.

I figured out a long time ago that nobody buys a Mac to save money and with Apple, you take what you can get! 🙂

    Thanks for posting!

  3. AAdvantage Geek, love the blog.

Honestly I’m surprised you couldn’t get a better deal. I’ve priced and/or ordered Apple machines through the ADC, educational, corporate, and government options on the store, and the discount is usually at least 5-10%.

Anyway, I’m glad to see educational discounts don’t disqualify you from receiving miles. In the past, I have seen that iPhone/iPad preorders were disqualified.

On a side note, there are a couple of third-party Apple vendors that sell stock machines below Apple prices, and offer more than 1 mile per dollar. I’ve purchased from MacMall via the AA Eshopping portal in the past.
