Japan for fewer AAdvantage Miles and a movie about an 86 Year Old Sushi Chef

The new documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi by David Gelb is about 86 year old master sushi chef Jiro Ono and his Michelin 3 star rated restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro in Tokyo. It’s a wonderful film and Mr. Ono represents many of the qualities I most admire about Tokyo and Japan: he’s dedicated and disciplined, meticulous and witty.

Here’s a clip.

If you’ve been to Japan, seeing the film will make you want to go back. And if you haven’t been, then watching it may make you want to go.

  1. Boy do I wish this was for business or first at 40% off…I have been wanting to go to Japan, not sure I can take a 16 hour flight in coach. I have been looking to use up an extra 2.5 days of PTO before the end of the fiscal year.

  2. You get used to it. After 16 years of flying to South Africa, India and Europe out of pocket I am used to flying coach. Longest flights I have flown are ATL-JNB, EWR-BOM, LAX-DXB, and IAH-DXB. Perhaps the sushi will taste even better after 16 hours in coach!

  3. @ HR – I wish I had your mileage balance! I’ve done some of the trans-Pacific flights in coach and even Burger King at LAX taste good after 11 hours. 😀
