Save money and earn more miles: 1,500 AAdvantage Bonus miles from Avis

Bonus

Offer extended through June 30, 2012

Looking back at all travel related bonus offers in 2011, the ones that earned me the most AAdvantage miles (aside from flying) were the ones that Avis offered throughout the year.

Their least lucrative offer was 1,500 miles with a 25% discount and their best was a 5,000 mile bonus with a 25% discount.  During much of the year they offered 2,000 bonus miles with a 25% discount, and that’s the one I used the most.  So I was happy to see the first 2012 offer from Avis:

• Now through February 28, 2012, June 30, 2012 American Airlines AAdvantage members can earn 1,500 AAdvantage bonus miles on rentals of 3 or more days at participating airport locations in the U.S., Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean.

• Use coupon # MUAA070 and provide your AAdvantage number at the time of reservation or at the rental counter to earn your AAdvantage bonus miles.

Update: Be aware (see the comments below) that there is some question as to whether or not the discount code is working properly. So before you confirm your rental reservation, compare the price with and without the discount code.

• This offer is in addition to your everyday savings of up to 25% when you use      AWD # K817156.

As you might expect, terms and conditions apply.  Such as:

• An advance reservation is required.
• Rental must begin by February 28, 2012. June 30. 2012.

  1. Most rental car agencies offer a free day on a three day weekend rental. So, unless I get the rental extremely cheap, I would rather have a free day than 1,500 AA miles.

  2. When I used this code for a 3 night rental in January the price went up $10 over the website’s standard rate. No 25% discount here.

  3. Hi Shannon – That’s not good. I panicked when I saw your comment, I wouldn’t want anyone to use the discount code if it isn’t truly a discount.

I compared prices Jan 27 through Jan 30 for SFO pickup and the discount code prices were cheaper than even the advance reservation prices, so I’m not sure why you didn’t see a discount. Which is concerning.

If you let me know the dates/location that you tried, I will bring it up with Avis so that they can provide an explanation.

Until we know why the discount didn’t work, I will advise readers to compare prices with and without the discount code.

Thanks for brining this to my attention!!

  4. @ Mark – I can’t argue with that logic, it’s a great idea.

When you consider that it cost more than 1,500 AAdvantage miles for a one day car rental (2,767 is the cheapest I found) giving up 1,500 miles and choosing the free day is a great value!

If you’re traveling during the week or on an expense account, then the miles might make more sense, but otherwise your advice is a better way to go.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

  5. Is this code deal still valid? I tried to enter the discount code when clicking on the link but was not able to. I was only able to enter my AA number and the AWD code K817156. Do you know if someone used this and actually received the 1,500 miles?

    1. @ Sassy – It’s still valid even though the form doesn’t accept it. I was able to go to avis.com and make a reservation using both the AWD code and the bonus code.

  6. The link provided still says “Now through May 31, 2013”. Where is the reference that this has been extended through June 30, 2013?
